Keeper Value explained

Keeper Value is one number that answers the only question a keeper decision asks: is holding this player worth the pick it costs? It equals the points a player adds over a replacement-level starter, minus the value of the draft pick you spend to keep them. Positive means you gain. Negative means you lose.

The term is our own, but the idea is old. Every good keeper manager already weighs production against cost in their head. Keeper Value just makes the two sides explicit so you can rank your whole roster instead of arguing with yourself about one player at a time.

The two halves

Keeper Value has a production half and a cost half. Get both right and the number tells you what to do.

Production over replacement

Raw points overstate a player's worth. What matters is how much better they are than the player you would use if you let them go. That fallback is replacement level: a startable body you could grab late in the draft or off waivers at the same position.

Subtract replacement-level production from your keeper's projection and you get the points they actually add to your lineup. This is where position scarcity shows up. Startable running backs run out faster than receivers in most formats, so a running back who clears replacement by 40 points can be worth more than a receiver who clears it by 40, because the drop-off behind them is steeper.

The cost of the pick

Keeping a player costs a draft pick, and picks are not free. An early pick is a cheap way to draft elite talent. A late pick is close to a coin flip. To compare the pick against the player, you convert the pick into a points value using what that draft slot historically returns.

A third-round pick might be worth a large chunk of expected points, so spending it on a keeper sets a high bar. A fourteenth-round pick is worth very little, so almost any real contributor clears it. The later the pick, the easier the keep.

Putting it together

Now the formula reads cleanly:

Keeper Value = (player points over replacement) minus (expected points from the pick you spend)

Work an example. Say a receiver projects for 60 points over replacement, and keeping them costs an eighth-round pick worth 25 expected points. Their Keeper Value is 60 minus 25, or plus 35. That is a strong keep. Now say keeping a similar receiver costs a second-round pick worth 90 expected points. Their Keeper Value is 60 minus 90, or minus 30. Same player, different cost, opposite decision.

This is why the biggest name on your roster is not always your best keep. A superstar kept at an early-round price can post a negative Keeper Value, because the pick you burn could have drafted comparable talent. How to choose your keepers shows how to use the ranking once you have it.

How to read the number

Once you score every keeper-eligible player, the ranking is direct:

  • Large positive Keeper Value. Clear keeps. Hold them without a second thought.
  • Small positive Keeper Value. Fine keeps, but check the escalating cost. A player who barely clears the bar this year may fall below it next season as the price climbs.
  • Negative Keeper Value. Let them go. The pick is worth more than the player. Draft their replacement and spend the pick elsewhere.

The catch with real leagues

The math is simple. The inputs are not. Replacement level shifts with your league size and scoring. Pick values shift with the number of keepers everyone holds, because a league where every manager keeps two players has a very different draft pool than one where they keep none.
